Welcome back!
This post is just a little background into why I want to become a financial advisor for publics employees, and specifically why public school teachers.
To begin, I have come from a family of public-school teachers. My Dad has been a public-school woodshop teacher for over 30 years as well as a high school rugby coach in Colorado. My mom started off as a high school U.S. history teacher, moved to be an athletic director, an assistant principal, and finally the principal of a high school for the last 12 years of her career. Lastly, my sister is currently a high school science teacher and cheerleading coach.
I had always thought about going into teaching, but figured out in college that it wasn't the path for me. Instead I pursued my degree in finance. I still wanted to be involved in public schools and help in a different way. Being raised by two public-school teachers I had always thought that they are an unpaid and underserve group of people. They have an incredible responsibility and aren't compensated the way they should.
Public employees have access to a pension program though PERA, but that isn't always enough to prepare them for major life events and retirement. Getting a finance degree and helping public school employees prepare for retirement is something I am passionate about because of my upbringing.
